I AM BIGGER THAN MY BLINDNESS
Jason
Georgia,
USA
“I thought that I was broken. I thought that something was wrong with me that couldn’t be fixed. But through networking and talking with people of the LHON community, I realized that there are so many things that blind people can achieve and accomplish.”
Jason has worked in healthcare for nearly thirty years as a registered nurse. His life changed suddenly when symptoms of LHON, a rare condition that causes central vision loss, first appeared. While the disease typically affects one eye before the other, in Jason’s case both eyes were affected at the same time.
The diagnosis brought fear, frustration, and major changes to both his personal and professional life. With the support of his family, friends, and colleagues, Jason gradually found new ways to adapt to daily life and continue working as a nurse, while still doing the things he loves.
Today, Jason comes across as confident, outgoing, and deeply connected to others. He finds joy in cooking for friends and family and has become involved in advocacy, helping people better understand vision loss and supporting those going through similar experiences.
